  To Rival a Reflection A Snippet from my Draft in Progress “Perfect,” she said over the red gown as she admired herself in her mirrors before heading over to the magic mirror to ask the question, to which she had no doubt what the answer would be. She reached for a tiara from her vanity and opened a drawer to retrieve some gloves, adding some rings overtop. The shoes she donned last added a few extra inches of height, which gave her the sensation that she towered invincibly over the world. She passed several other mirrors on her way, and her smile grew wider and wider as she progressed down the hallways and continued to see her beautiful, perfect face in each glass. “No one could be fairer than I!” she breathed to her reflection. “Except you,” she added with a wink. Writers to Writers Challenge #2

I couldn't come up with a title for this story! For the longest time I couldn't come up with any story at all for this challenge. The parameters were that the story must include barbed wire, a piece of blue fabric, and howling winds. I felt this called for something bleak: the barbed wire made me think of imprisonment or oppression, the blue fabric perhaps a torn bit of clothing from someone who tried to escape over the fence. Instead, the story that came out of me was of a rather different flavour, an absurd little children's storybook style piece. Just Like Momma

This is my third submission for the Writers to Writers Challenge on Instagram. To see my original submission, visit my Instagram page at @selinawriting. The prompt for this round was to include a "key", literally or figuratively. Photo by Timothy Eberly on Unsplash Just Like Momma Danielle smiled. She liked her bow and the spunky nose Momma called a cute little button.  "I look pretty!" she chirped, and skipped downstairs for supper. She wanted to ask Momma what to bring for Show-and-Tell, but Momma looked busy. Danielle sat on the piano bench and watched Momma in the kitchen. Then she turned to admire the ebony wood and the shiny white keys, a long row of grinning teeth. She danced her fingers a hair above the keys and imagined music soaring like a bird over the sea.
