  To Rival a Reflection A Snippet from my Draft in Progress “Perfect,” she said over the red gown as she admired herself in her mirrors before heading over to the magic mirror to ask the question, to which she had no doubt what the answer would be. She reached for a tiara from her vanity and opened a drawer to retrieve some gloves, adding some rings overtop. The shoes she donned last added a few extra inches of height, which gave her the sensation that she towered invincibly over the world. She passed several other mirrors on her way, and her smile grew wider and wider as she progressed down the hallways and continued to see her beautiful, perfect face in each glass. “No one could be fairer than I!” she breathed to her reflection. “Except you,” she added with a wink. A flash fiction (1000 words or less) fractured faiytale submitted to the Fractured Lit competition A Thorn to Wake the Dead “Hello?” My quivering voice seemed too loud even in that grand foyer, echoing around the cascading chandelier and curling between every finely carved detail on the walls and ceilings.  Who speaks? A shiver pricked at the nape of my neck. Had I imagined that voice, or had someone spoken? “I am looking for my father.” He is not here. The spidery voice beckoned me as though it had entrapped me in gossamer threads, reeling me towards the marble staircase. “Where is my father?” I demanded, mustering any courage that hadn’t fled upon first heaving open the doors to the mansion. Not here. I climbed the dark stairs, brushing away shadows that tried to ensnare me with long, cold fingers. Writers to Writers Challenge #2

I couldn't come up with a title for this story! For the longest time I couldn't come up with any story at all for this challenge. The parameters were that the story must include barbed wire, a piece of blue fabric, and howling winds. I felt this called for something bleak: the barbed wire made me think of imprisonment or oppression, the blue fabric perhaps a torn bit of clothing from someone who tried to escape over the fence. Instead, the story that came out of me was of a rather different flavour, an absurd little children's storybook style piece.
